Felipe Xicotancatl Wreck
This ship was built in 1944 and saw service as the mine sweeper Scuffles in the US Navy until 1962, when the Mexican Navy purchased her. She was converted to a Gun Boat, renamed the Felipe Xicotancatl C53, and patrolled the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean taking part in rescue missions and patrolling for illegal arms and drugs. In 1999 she was decommissioned, donated to Cozumel Island Marine Park and sunk in 82’ just off Chankanaab Park.
This wreck measures 184’ long by 33’ wide by 40’ height, and is popular for both pleasure diving and wreck training. It is now completely overgrown with marine life. There are many different corals and marine life.
There are large green moray eels and outstanding numbers of black, Nassau, and other large grouper that can be seen around the wreck.
It has three decks and Lines, large port holes and ample light zones allow for safe entry and exit for divers. There are two safe access points to the interior.
The barge is a superb night dive and excellent to photograph.
