Sablaos Reef Dive Site

Sablaos Reef (Playa Del Carmen)

Marine Life Dive Site

Dive Type: Sabalos Reef

Sabalos Reef

Depth: 20 – 50 feet, 6 – 14m
Visibilty: 70 feet, 20m
Access by day boat
Currents: Strong

Sabalos, a demanding dive, is best dived close to the bottom of the reef, moving along its edge, so as to protect yourself from the strong currents… if you veer from the edge its easy to get caught in the current, swept over the top and miss the best parts of the reef.

The reef is a mixture of various, healthy, hard and soft corals, with lots of Starfish along the sand. There’s a variety of other fish here, along with the Tarpon (Sabalos) that the Reef took it’s name from. There is also a small cavern near to the end of the dive which can be explored. Large snappers are sometimes seen at the top of the reef, which is at a depth convenient for safety deco stops.

This reef has an interesting topography with walls, groves, overhangs and traversable passages. If you think it’s good during the day, try it at night!
