Aktun Ha, which translates as water cave, is a wide cenote that expands into a complex system of tunnels. The entrance into the cenote is easy as the water is just a few inches below floor level, and you have to guide through roots and fallen trees.
The cenote is very large, with caved in trees, and atmospheric light falling around the tree roots. The cenote itself is beautifully decorated. During the wamer months, a white five foot layer of algae covers the waters surface and this leads to a spectacular visual effect, almost like mist. After two metres the water becomes clear, but the view back through the algae with branches and roots poking through the layer, with the odd turtle flitting in and out, is like being in a mythical world. There a quite a lot of fish around too.
