Temple Of Doom (Tulum)
Cavern Dive Site
Dive Type: Temple Of Doom Cavern System
Temple of Doom
Average Depth: 14m, maximum depth 19m.
Located 2km from Tulum.
There aren’t any facilities at the site, such as toilets, catering or gear tables; and once kitted up, there is a decent walk to the entry point.
The Temple Of Doom is also known as the Calvera, even though its original name was Cenote Esquele. It is called the temple of doom due to its 3 entry holes which resemble 2 eye sockets and a mouth like a skull. A mixture of both salt and fresh water result in an effect called halocline, which creates bluring, smoke like visuals.
The Temple consists of several large caverns with passage ways and cave formations. The main cavern is a large room with a central hill for divers to circle around, up to the surface. Stalactites hang from the ceiling, with multi coloured formations on walls and floors. To appreciate the views, you’ll spend a lot of time swimming on your back.
Some of the best dives in this location include: The Coliseum Room, The Hall of Giant Rooms and the Madonna Passage.
