HMCS Chaudiere (British Columbia)
Wreck Dive Site
In 1992 the HMCS Chaudiere was the first destroyer -escort to be sunk to form an artificial reef. Since then "The Chaud" , as she is affectionately known, has become home to a diverse community of marine creatures. Having deservedly gained a reputation as one of the best wreck dives on the Pacific Coast, "The Chaud" gets more amazing with each year, this 111 meter (366 foot) wreck is now the most requested dive on the Sunshine Coast.
Located in Sechelt Inlet off Kunichin Point, on the Sunshine Coast this is an excellent dive for all avid wreck divers. She lies on her port side(90o) at depths ranging from 50 feet at the highest point on the starboard stern to 140 feet at the deepest part of the port bow. The superstructure is about 80′ and at the bow is 90-100 ft. Access holes have been cut into the hull and super structure to allow access to the three diveable decks, there are loads of exit and entry points for penetrating the ship .
This vessel offers many areas for exploration and interior penetration to those qualified. Glassy tunicates are everywhere on this wreck, initially appearing in the first 6 months of being underwater, and this has only attracted more marine life.
Since being sunk, the ship has become home to a diverse community of marine creatures. At a minimum, you can expect to see lots of plumose anemone and tunicates that have blanketed her outsides, and fish, octopus and various other guests peek out from her many compartments.
Visibility: Visibility in this area usually averages 30 - 50ft and has been known to exceed 100ft.
